Mason is a Katabasian of the Parish of Tide and Flesh.

Personality

Mason is excessively cautious and speaks in coded messages. He acts in his own self interest, playing Carpenter and Faulkner off of each other in Season 1. When trouble comes to one of his disciples, he leaves them to deal with the fallout. He is not courageous, choosing the easiest way out.

Background

Mason grew up in the Parish of Tide and Flesh. He rose through the ranks by going on pilgrimages, and became a Katabasian. He knew Adelina Glass, which he tells Carpenter when he goes to bring her back to the faith.

Chapter 1: Let Me Speak First Of Revelations	Mason speaks to Carpenter in code, asking how her and Faulkner's journey is going. He asks if they are being followed.
Chapter 2: And Next Of Dark Deceit	Mason tells Carpenter to visit Peterson. He speaks to Faulkner, who expresses doubt over Carpenter. Mason offers to send someone to collect them, and at Faulkner's refusal, then tells him to call the authorities on her if he can't handle the situation.
Chapter 6: It Winds, It Worms, It Wends	Mason recounts the story of the Promised Bride. In Carpenter's flashback, he pretends to be her Uncle Jim in order to get her to rejoin the faith.
Chapter 14: And In Ruined Flesh Ascend	Faulkner calls Mason to tell him that they have found the Wither Mark, but Carpenter was arrested. Faulkner gives Mason an altered version of the Wither Mark. Mason tells Faulkner simply to take some of the officer's out with him.
Chapter 15: For My Song Has No Beginning...	Mason announces the events at Marcel’s Crossing as a victory for the Parish. He praises Carpenter and Faulkner's selfless sacrifice, and says they have earned themselves a place in the Verses.
Chapter 16: And the Current Flows On Without End	Mason gives a sermon in the Paraclete's Gulch. He tells his disciples not to listen to the news or they will be punished. Faulkner interrupts the sermon. Mason confronts Faulkner about the false Wither Mark he gave him. Mason lies and says that their last conversation was cut short. Mason wonders what Faulkner means by saying he is a Prophet of the Trawler-man before threatening Faulkner. He offers Faulkner an honorary seat on the Katabasian's council. Mason sends Faulkner out on another pilgrimage with his own group of acolytes, promising him the title of Katabasian when he returns.
Chapter 28: To Drift On, To Dream, To Die	Mason has fled the Gulch before the fighting begins. He corners Adjudicator Shrue while they are tipsy and alone. He tells them that if they call off the attack on the Gulch and legalise the Parish of Tide and Flesh then he will give them the Wither Mark to use in the war effort. He calls Sister Thurrocks.
Chapter 29: And Where My Final Footsteps Fall	When Faulkner enters his chamber, Mason is waiting for him. Faulkner asks him how he stopped the Siege, and Mason tells him about his plan to legalise the Parish. Mason tells Faulkner that the preparations for him to be awarded the title of Katabasian are underway. Faulkner kills Mason and Thurrocks, before framing Carpenter for the murders.

Connections

• Carpenter began being mentored by Mason when she was 18. She never trusts him. When he speaks about Carpenter, he sounds almost affectionate.

• Faulkner is mentored by Mason. He trusts Mason at first, until Mason abandons him to the lawful authorities. From then on, Faulkner is disillusioned with him. He murders Mason for trying to legalise the Parish.

• Thurrocks is loyal to Mason, spying on Faulkner for him. She gains Faulkner's trust to get the Wither Mark in order to give it to Mason as a bargaining chip to legalise the Faith.

• High Katabasian Roemont and Mason sat on the Katabasian's council together. They have a long history from growing up in the Faith together.
